UK Seeks Volunteers for Groundbreaking Norovirus Vaccine Trial

A new vaccine against norovirus, commonly known as the winter vomiting bug, is being tested in a landmark trial across 27 NHS hospitals and centers in England, Scotland, and Wales.

The Need for a Vaccine

Norovirus is a highly infectious disease that causes widespread illness, resulting in approximately 12,000 hospital admissions and 80 deaths annually in the UK. It also puts a significant strain on the NHS, costing taxpayers around £100 million each year.

Trial Details

Researchers are seeking 2,500 volunteers to participate in the trial, which will assess the efficacy of Moderna’s mRNA vaccine. Half of the participants will receive the vaccine, while the other half will receive a placebo. The trial will span approximately 25 months.

Expert Insights

Dr. Patrick Moore, chief investigator, emphasized the urgency for a norovirus vaccine, stating, “Currently, there are no approved vaccines globally, and treatment is limited to intravenous fluids.”

Health and Social Care Secretary Wes Streeting added, “A successful vaccine will shift our health system from sickness to prevention, reducing NHS pressure and keeping people well during winter.”

Key Facts

  • Norovirus affects people of all ages, peaking in winter.
  • Adults aged 60+ are encouraged to participate due to increased vulnerability.
  • The vaccine targets three strains responsible for 67% of 2023/24 cases.
  • Global recruitment aims for 25,000 participants.
