Meet Dr. Samuel Achilefu, a trailblazing Nigerian radiologist who’s revolutionising cancer surgery with his cutting-edge infrared goggles

These innovative goggles enable surgeons to visualise cancer cells in real-time, ensuring that no cancerous cells are left behind. The technology uses a special dye that makes cancer cells glow blue, allowing surgeons to distinguish them from healthy tissue.

Dr. Achilefu’s invention has the potential to transform cancer treatment by:

  • Providing real-time visualisation of cancer cells during surgery
  • Eliminating the need for surgeons to wait for lab results to confirm removal of all cancerous cells
  • Improving patient outcomes and reducing the need for follow-up surgeries

The idea for the Medical Vision Goggles was born out of conversations with surgical fellows who expressed the need for a more efficient way to detect cancer cells during surgery. Dr. Achilefu and his team drew inspiration from night-vision goggles and virtual reality technology to develop the wearable optical see-through device.

The goggles use a fluorescence imaging AR RPi-based system equipped with battery-powered capability and affordable materials, making it a potentially game-changing technology for cancer treatment. With funding from the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Achilefu’s team is working to make the technology more accessible to surgeons worldwide.

The ultimate goal is to provide surgeons with objective, data-driven guidance to achieve consistent surgical outcomes, regardless of where cancer surgery is performed. Dr. Achilefu’s groundbreaking work has earned him numerous accolades, including 59 patents in the USA and the prestigious 2014 St. Louis Award.”
