In a significant stride towards restructuring the building industry in Nigeria, the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON) has unveiled plans to formally register Building Technologists, Technicians, and Craftsmen. The move, according to the Council, is geared towards strengthening the professional framework and ensuring greater competence and accountability in the construction sector.

The announcement was made by the Chairman of the Council, Builder Samson Opaluwah, during a recent press briefing in Abuja. He explained that the initiative is part of CORBON’s statutory mandate to supervise and regulate all levels of professionals involved in the building delivery process.
Opaluwah noted that the development aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Initiative, particularly in the area of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). “The introduction of these new registers is a milestone for the building profession. It will promote professional growth, ensure competency recognition, and expand licensing beyond the registered builder,” he said.
He further disclosed that the National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF) and related certifications have now been approved for use in CORBON’s registration system. This creates additional tiers of registration and recognizes specialties within the building profession, thereby enhancing the career structure for artisans and middle-level professionals.
Opaluwah highlighted the broad benefits of the initiative. He said it would provide professional identity and recognition to practitioners, assist employers with staff development, aid regulatory enforcement, and most importantly, assure the public of the safety, quality, and competence of building projects across the country.
With this reform, CORBON is set to reinforce professionalism at all levels in the building industry, providing a more structured and credible environment for both practitioners and stakeholders.
