The Federal Government has announced plans to meet with the leadership of the striking nurses today, in a bid to resolve the ongoing industrial action. The Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Ali Pate, made the announcement, stating that the meeting is part of efforts to address the nurses’ demands.
The nurses, under the umbrella of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), began a seven-day nationwide warning strike on Wednesday, citing poor remuneration, staff shortages, unpaid allowances, and unsafe working conditions.
The strike has disrupted healthcare services across Nigeria, with patients bearing the brunt. At several hospitals, doctors have been left to perform tasks typically handled by nursing staff, and some patients have been discharged or forced to seek care at private hospitals.
The Federal Government has expressed commitment to resolving the issues, with the Minister of Health and Social Welfare stating that some issues are not solely financial and can be resolved through negotiation. The government is working to resolve discontent among various health professional groups and has withdrawn a circular that sparked controversy.
The meeting between the Federal Government and the striking nurses is expected to take place today, with both sides hoping to find a resolution to the crisis.
