What’s Open and Closed on July 4th?
As we celebrate Independence Day on July 4th, here’s what you need to know about what will be open and closed:
- Closed: Banks and post offices will be closed in observance of the holiday. The stock market will also be closed.
- Open: Most major restaurants, grocery stores, and retail chains will remain open. This includes popular names like Walmart, Starbucks, Chick-fil-A, and Target.
A Brief History of the Fourth of July
The tradition of celebrating the Fourth of July began when Philadelphians marked the first anniversary of American independence with a spontaneous celebration. This event is described in a letter by John Adams to his daughter, Abigail, according to the Library of Congress.
The annual observation of Independence Day became more regular after the War of 1812, with significant events like the groundbreaking ceremonies for the Erie Canal and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad timed to coincide with July 4th festivities. Independence Day was officially designated as a federal holiday on June 28, 1870, when Congress passed the necessary legislation.
Most businesses, including major retail and restaurant chains, will be open on July 4th. However, banks, post offices, and the stock market will observe the holiday by closing for the day.
