The Entitlement Mindset

By Kede Aihie

Taribo West’s recent outburst against the NFF and Lagos government for their alleged lack of support for Peter Rufai’s funeral highlights a deeper issue: an entitlement mindset that pervades Nigerian society. It’s striking that someone who played top-level football globally struggles financially due to a lack of financial literacy. This underscores the need for education in wealth management, not just for athletes but also for entertainers and those who inherit wealth.

Addressing the Challenges of Nigerian Athletes

The struggles of Nigerian athletes post-retirement are a pressing concern. Despite their past successes, many athletes face financial difficulties, highlighting the need for a comprehensive support system.

A National Sports Federation Pension Fund

Establishing a pension fund for athletes is a crucial step. The government and sports organizations can collaborate to create a fund that provides financial security for athletes after retirement, financed through a combination of government grants, sports organization contributions, and athlete deductions.

Holistic Support Systems

In addition to a pension fund, athletes need access to retirement planning services, career development programs, and emergency medical funds. Sports organizations can offer retirement planning services and require athletes to contribute to a retirement fund, while career development programs can equip athletes with skills beyond their sports career.

Sustainable Solutions

A sustainable medical fund or insurance program can cover athletes’ medical expenses, reducing reliance on individual donations. Additionally, athlete welfare organizations can provide resources and advocate for athletes’ rights, ensuring their well-being and financial security.

A Yearning Gap

There’s a significant gap in our society’s approach to wealth management. Providing athletes and entertainers with financial education and planning skills can help them navigate their wealth more effectively, requiring a shift in mindset from reliance on others to taking personal responsibility for one’s financial future.

Financial Literacy: A Critical Need

Financial literacy and awareness management should be encouraged for sportsmen and women. Numerous case studies of Nigerian ex-footballers who have fallen on hard times after earning substantial income during their careers illustrate this need. A troubling trend is evident in the entertainment industry, where young artists with global exposure and earnings often fail to plan or engage in financial sustainability. Investing in expensive items like luxury cars is foolhardy; money doesn’t last if it’s not invested properly. This presents an opportunity for financial experts to provide guidance on generational wealth.

A Brighter Future

By implementing these solutions, addressing the entitlement mindset, and promoting financial literacy, we can ensure Nigerian athletes have a more secure future and the support they deserve. Collaboration between the government, sports organizations, and stakeholders is essential to address the challenges faced by athletes and provide them with the support they need to thrive beyond their sports career.
