The Double-Edged Sword of Hustling at 16: Challenges and Opportunities

In Nigeria, 16 is mostly the age where most teenagers are focused on their studies, enjoying their youthful age, and being catered for by their parents. This is, however not the case for most young Nigerians. Many individuals are made to contend with the unbearable and sometimes unrealistic financial expectations, high levels of unemployment, and poverty. They, therefore, embark on the back-breaking task of putting food on the table often being the sole providers for their families at a very young age

The Dark Side: Challenges of Hustling at 16

There are some challenges that come with hustling at sixteen, some are listed below:

  1. A childhood lost: Adolescents are unable to enjoy carefree years of peace but instead face the challenges that come with adulthood at a young age
  2. School Dropout Rates: Many students resolve to stop going to school to assist their families financially instead.
  3. Victims of Abuse: Naive teenagers are easily integrated into the system where they are likely to be exploited by employers and even mentors because of the lack of proper experience.
  4. Physical and Emotional Strain: Working for long hours, doing vigorous work, and financial worries affect both the mental and physical wellbeing.

Hustling at 16 has a lot of negative sides, however, it also builds the spirit of resilience and determination.

  1. Early Financial Literacy: Young hustlers find themselves imbibed with the proper financial discipline.
  2. Entrepreneurial Spirit: The majority of them acquire business knowledge that prepares them for the future.
  3. Resilience and Adaptability: There would be strength and adaptation to situations one overcomes.
  4. Sense of Purpose: Taking care of someone gives a teenager a reason to live and focus within particular boundaries.

Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, who served as the Nigerian Finance Minister, stated that “We can encourage youthful entrepreneurship but let us do something about poverty and education first so that there are options for young Nigerians.”

Hustling at 16 can be said to be multi-faceted as it comes with its advantages and disadvantages.
