Stars to Return for First Shrek Film in 16 Years

Shrek fans rejoice! The beloved green ogre is making a comeback with Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz all reprising their iconic roles. This marks the first Shrek film in 16 years.

While the plot remains under wraps, it’s confirmed that Myers will return as Shrek, Diaz as Princess Fiona, and Murphy as Donkey. DreamWorks Animation announced on X: “Not too Far, Far Away… Shrek 5 is coming to theatres on July 1, 2026 with Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz.”

The original Shrek, released in 2001, was a massive success, earning the first Oscar for Best Animated Feature and grossing $487 million worldwide. The franchise continued with Shrek 2 in 2004, Shrek The Third in 2007, and Shrek Forever After in 2010. Including two Puss in Boots spin-offs featuring Antonio Banderas, Shrek 5 will be the seventh film in the broader series.

There’s no word yet on Banderas’ return for this installment. However, Murphy hinted in a recent Collider interview that Donkey might be getting his own spin-off. He revealed that work on Shrek 5 began months ago and that the first act has already been recorded, with completion expected this year.

Murphy enthusiastically stated, “Shrek is coming out and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie.”
