Police Deploy 35,000 Officers for Edo Governorship Election
To ensure a secure and peaceful governorship election in Edo State on September 21, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has deployed 35,000 officers from the Nigeria Police Force ¹ ² ³. Additionally, 8,000 personnel from other security agencies will support the police operation.
At a stakeholders meeting organized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Benin, Egbetokun assured Edo residents of their safety during the election, urging them to vote with confidence ¹ ². He emphasized that securing the electoral process is the sole responsibility of the police, with support from other security agencies.
Security Measures
- No Movement Restriction: A restriction on movement will be enforced from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on election day.
- Suspension of Edo State Security Network (ESSN): The I-G announced the indefinite suspension of the ESSN, stating that no private or state-owned security apparatus would be permitted to operate during or after the election.
- Professionalism and Impartiality: The police force is trained to perform its duties impartially and professionally, ensuring a fair and secure electoral environment.
Egbetokun warned against political thuggery and violence, affirming that the police would take action against any offenders ¹ ². With these measures in place, the police are committed to providing a conducive environment for the election.
