Former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele, showed up at Ikeja State High Court in Lagos today to face charges of alleged abuse of office.
Accompanied by his co-defendant, Henry Isioma Omole, Emefiele is facing 26 counts before Justice Rahman Oshodi.
The charges, filed by Mr. Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), allege that Emefiele misused his authority between 2022 and 2023 in Lagos. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) claimed that Emefiele directed the allocation of foreign exchange totaling $2,136,391,737.33 without proper bids, which the EFCC considers harmful to Nigerians’ rights.
Additionally, the EFCC alleges that between 2020 and 2021, Emefiele similarly directed the allocation of $291,945,785.59 in foreign exchange without proper bidding procedures, and in 2021, he allegedly directed a special allocation of $1,769,254,793.16, all to the detriment of Nigerians’ rights.
