John Mahama Sworn in as Ghana’s New President

John Mahama took the oath of office as Ghana’s new president today Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at Independence Square in Accra, the Ghanaian capital. This marks Mahama’s return to the presidency, a position he previously held from 2012 to 2017.¹

Before Mahama’s swearing-in, Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang made history by becoming Ghana’s first female vice president. The Chief Justice of Ghana, Gertrude Torkornoo, administered the oath of office at the event.

Mahama’s inauguration comes after he won the December election, defeating incumbent Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia. Mahama’s mission is to revive Ghana’s ailing economy, a challenge he faces as he begins his new term.

This is not Mahama’s first time in the presidency; he previously served as President of Ghana from 2012 to 2017, taking over after the death of his predecessor, John Atta Mills. During his previous term, Mahama implemented various policies aimed at improving Ghana’s economy and infrastructure.

As Mahama begins his new term, he faces the daunting task of reviving Ghana’s economy, which has been facing significant challenges in recent years. However, with his experience and leadership, many Ghanaians are hopeful that he will be able to turn the economy around and bring prosperity to the country.
