In a historic and emotional moment for the Roman Catholic Church, American-born Cardinal Robert Prevost has been elected as the new Pope, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. The 69-year-old Chicago native emerged as the new pontiff following a swift and unified conclave that concluded in just four rounds of voting—a rare sign of agreement among the cardinals.
Stepping onto the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica for his first address, Pope Leo was met with thunderous applause and cheers from a crowd of over 40,000 people gathered in St. Peter’s Square. Many waved flags and sang hymns as the new pope offered a heartfelt message of peace, unity, and hope.
“May peace be with all of you,” he said in Italian, before switching to Spanish to thank his former diocese in Peru, where he served as a missionary and archbishop for many years. “God loves us all, unconditionally,” he added, drawing warm applause as he paid tribute to his predecessor, the late Pope Francis.
Known as a reformer and bridge-builder, Pope Leo’s election is seen as a continuation of the inclusive and outward-looking legacy of Pope Francis. Religion experts believe his missionary background and multicultural experience make him uniquely positioned to connect the diverse corners of the global Catholic community.
“He is someone who can bridge different worlds,” noted Aleem Maqbool, BBC’s religion editor. “There was a clear sense that the Church needed someone who could move forward with the spirit of Pope Francis while fostering greater unity.”
The name “Leo” evokes a historical legacy of strong leadership and doctrinal clarity, with Pope Leo XIII remembered for his intellectual depth and engagement with modern society. Pope Leo XIV’s election marks the first time an American has ascended to the papacy, a moment many see as symbolic of the Church’s global evolution.
As the Carabinieri band played beneath the balcony and chants of “Viva il Papa” echoed through the square, Pope Leo XIV offered one more blessing and invited all people of faith to walk together toward peace and love.
The world now watches with great anticipation as a new chapter begins for the Catholic Church under the leadership of Pope Leo XIV.
