Chishuru’s owner and head chef, Adejoké Bakare, made history as the first Black woman to receive a Michelin star in the UK this month. In an interview with The Guardian, she expressed that the achievement still feels surreal and that the recognition is truly an honor.
Reflecting on the accolade, she shared, “Until this morning, I was just focused on enjoying the honor itself, which I’m hugely honored by. But seeing reactions on social media today, I’m starting to feel a weight of responsibility on my shoulders too; it’s lovely.”
The chief inspector at Michelin in the UK praised Bakare’s unique style, describing the restaurant as a wonderful reflection of her personality and cooking – characterized by being fun, full of life, generous, and immensely enjoyable.
