Breaking the Silence: End Violence Against Women and Girls

We stand with the survivors of violence and abuse as we continue through the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. The Orange Campaign is a call to action that reminds us that without working together, there cannot be a world where women and girls may live free from fear and violence.

One out of three Nigerian women has experienced physical or sexual violence in her life, according to statistics. It is a staggering statistic and shows how much work needs to be done. There would be occasions when it’s most obvious that women and girls suffer unfairly from violence, and we will have to act.

Consequences of violence against women and girls are far-reaching, not only for the individual but also for her family and community. It can lead to physical and emotional trauma, restrict access to education and economic opportunities, and perpetuate a cycle of poverty and inequality.

What Can We Do About It?

We can listen to the survivors, believe them. We can create safe spaces for women and girls to open up about their stories and seek help. We can even champion policy and laws that would up hold women’s rights and accountability of offenders.

Be part of the campaign against violence on women and girls. Wear orange to show your support, share your story or a message of solidarity across social media platforms on the hashtag #OrangeTheWorld, or demand action from your leaders.

Together, we can build a world where women and girls could be free from experiencing violence and fear. Let’s break the silence, let’s take action and then bring change.
