Adaora Umeoji’s Zenith Bank Stake Rises to $27 Million

By Nigeria Magazine Desk

Zenith Bank Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Adaora Umeoji, now holds a stake in the Nigerian bank valued at about $27.09 million, following a rise in the value of the bank’s shares.

Umeoji owns 285,096,933 Zenith Bank shares, valued at N35.89 billion based on the bank’s closing share price of N125.90 on September 14, 2026. The holding represents the largest shareholding by a serving chief executive of a Nigerian bank in the institution they lead.

The value of Umeoji’s stake has increased by approximately $6 million since April, when it was valued at about $21 million. This represents an increase of roughly 29 percent over five months, as Zenith Bank’s share price moved from around N97.60 to N125.90.

Umeoji became Zenith Bank’s Group Managing Director and CEO on June 1, 2024, succeeding Ebenezer Onyeagwu. Her appointment made her the first woman to lead the bank. She joined Zenith Bank in 1998 and rose through several senior positions, including Deputy Managing Director, before taking over as CEO.

Her educational background spans several disciplines. She studied Sociology at the University of Jos and later obtained two Master of Business Administration degrees from the University of Calabar and the University of Lagos. She also holds a doctorate in business administration, law degrees and has completed executive programmes at institutions including Harvard University, Columbia University, Wharton and London Business School.

Although Umeoji has built a significant position in Zenith Bank, the bank’s founder, Jim Ovia, remains its largest individual shareholder. Ovia holds more than 5.8 billion shares, more than 20 times Umeoji’s holding.

Zenith Bank reported a pre-tax profit of more than N1 trillion for 2024. The bank also proposed increasing its 2025 dividend to N10 per share, a move that would translate to approximately N2.85 billion in dividends for Umeoji based on her shareholding.

The bank is also among 10 Nigerian companies entering FTSE Russell’s frontier index series on September 21, 2026, following Nigeria’s move from unclassified to frontier market status.

Umeoji’s growing stake highlights the increasing role of executive share ownership in Nigeria’s banking sector, while her rise from a long-serving Zenith Bank executive to the institution’s first female CEO marks another significant chapter in the bank’s leadership history.
