Cape Verde pushed Argentina to the very limit as the world champions squeezed into the World Cup Round of 16 with a chaotic 3-2 win that owed as much to resilience as it did to fortune. Lionel Messi was on the scoresheet for Argentina, but an own goal ultimately proved decisive after a fearless Cape Verde performance that has already become the story of the tournament.
Cape Verde came out without fear and it paid off. Drawing upon a diaspora that has strengthened the squad, the Blue Sharks scored two outstanding goals and refused to buckle even when behind. The moment of the night belonged to left back Sidny Cabral. The 23-year-old, born in the Netherlands in 2003 and younger brother of Cape Verde international Rodny Lopes Cabral, cut inside, switched to his right foot and unleashed a ferocious strike for Cape Verde’s second. Worthy of a Gen Z highlight reel, he then dashed to the stands to hug his girlfriend.
At the back, Cape Verde’s 40-year-old goalkeeper was outstanding, and was backed by a defence that matched Argentina’s attack with grit and composure right until the final whistle. Argentina were forced into an own goal under Cape Verde pressure, and even Messi could not put the game to bed comfortably. Despite the defeat, Cape Verde won admirers worldwide for their intensity and belief, and showed that Argentina are there to be beaten.
Argentina advance to the last 16, but they will know they were given a huge scare. For Cape Verde, the result may be a loss, but the performance will live long. They gave everything and proved that on this stage, opportunity equals belief.
