The United States has extended the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) to December 2028, restoring a key trade arrangement that provides eligible sub-Saharan African countries with duty-free and preferential access to the US market.
The extension follows the expiration of the trade programme on September 30, 2025.
AGOA has played an important role in supporting African exports to the United States by providing preferential market access for qualifying products. Its extension is expected to give African businesses and exporters additional time and certainty to strengthen their presence in the US market.
The development could also encourage African countries to increase local production, expand value-added exports and improve their competitiveness in international trade.
