Comedian Trevor Noah hosted the award ceremony, kicking off proceedings with jokes about Pharrell, Bieber, and a pointed jab at Nicki Minaj and Donald Trump, who were not present.
The ceremony featured opening performances from Bruno Mars & Rosé and Carpenter, followed by performances from artists including Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, and Tyler, the Creator.
In the Best African Music Performance category, Tyla won the award for her song “Push 2 Start,” beating out Nigerian artists Burna Boy, Davido, Ayra Starr, and Wizkid. This marks Tyla’s second Grammy win in this category, following her win in 2024 for “Water”.
Caetano Veloso and Maria Bethânia took home the Best Global Music Album award for their collaborative live album “Caetano e Bethânia Ao Vivo”. Burna Boy’s album “No Sign of Weakness” was also nominated in this category.
Other notable African nominees included Burna Boy, who was nominated for Best Global Music Album, and Angélique Kidjo, who received a nomination for Best Global Music Performance for her song “Jerusalema”.
Fela Kuti was honored with a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award, marking a significant milestone in recognizing African music’s profound global impact. This prestigious recognition not only celebrates Kuti’s groundbreaking contributions to music but also highlights the genre’s enduring influence on the world stage.
