Professor Andrew Agbaje, a Nigerian researcher at the University of Eastern Finland (UEF), has been awarded a €1.5 million European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant to lead a five-year research project on youth vaping.
The project, known as VAPE-HABIT, will investigate how vaping affects young people’s heart, brain, kidneys, liver and metabolic health.
The research comes amid growing concerns over rising nicotine use among teenagers and the potential long-term health effects of vaping among young people.
According to the Embassy of Finland in Nigeria, the grant highlights the strength of Finnish-Nigerian scientific collaboration and the growing contribution of African researchers to scientific research in Europe.
Professor Agbaje’s achievement also underscores the increasing global recognition of Nigerian researchers contributing to major health and scientific research initiatives.
