The Federal Government has brought together 120 researchers, startups, and stakeholders to inaugurate the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy workshop.

Taking place from April 15 to 18, 2024, in Abuja, the workshop aims to craft an AI strategy for Nigeria.

Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, expressed in a statement that this gathering marks a significant step in Nigeria’s efforts to leverage AI for national progress. Tijani also commended Nigeria’s wealth of talent in the AI domain, finding it impressive and inspiring.

AI has emerged as a versatile technology, poised to reshape various sectors and fuel economic growth. Research suggests it could contribute $15.7 trillion to the global economy by 2030, with significant portions from productivity gains and new services. Additionally, strategic AI adoption could boost Africa’s GDP by $234 billion by 2030, according to the International Finance Corporation.

Nigeria, boasting a vibrant tech startup scene, stands to benefit from AI’s potential. With proactive leadership, it can harness AI for economic diversification and inclusive growth. However, this journey presents challenges such as ethics, bias, and job displacement.

A human-centered approach is crucial to address these challenges and ensure fairness and accountability. Nigeria needs a national AI strategy to guide its development efforts, focusing on sustainable development and social inclusion. The ongoing national AI workshop signals the country’s commitment to this endeavor.

The workshop attendees, including individuals with remarkable achievements in AI, exemplify Nigeria’s talent pool and potential in this field. With collaborative efforts and support from partners, Nigeria aims to lead in ethical and inclusive AI innovation, creating opportunities for all its citizens.
