Maryland Governor Reflects on Juneteenth, Highlights Progress Toward Equity and Justice

On Juneteenth, Governor Wes Moore emphasized the importance of acknowledging the nation’s history while working toward a more equitable future. In a recent statement, Moore highlighted Maryland’s efforts to address systemic inequalities and promote justice.

According to the Governor, Maryland has invested $1.3 billion in its four Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), demonstrating a commitment to supporting Black education and empowerment. Additionally, the state has directed over $816 million in procurement awards to Black-owned businesses, fostering economic growth and opportunities.

Another significant step toward justice was taken with the issuance of the largest state pardon in U.S. history, pardoning 175,000 Maryland convictions for cannabis possession. This move aims to rectify past injustices and promote fairness in the justice system.

While acknowledging the progress made, Governor Moore emphasised that more work remains to be done. He encouraged continued efforts toward creating a more just and equitable society, stating, “Let’s keep doing our part, and let’s keep bending the arc toward justice.”
