The Lagos State House of Assembly has been embroiled in a dramatic and intriguing power struggle following the impeachment of Speaker Mudashiru Obasa on January 13, 2025. Obasa’s removal was executed while he was in the United States, with many describing it as a political “coup” orchestrated by powerful figures within the All Progressives Congress (APC) ¹.
The impeachment was endorsed by 32 out of 40 lawmakers, citing reasons such as financial irregularities, allegations of high-handed leadership, and past corruption allegations. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda was elected as the new Speaker, making history as the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
However, the drama took a new turn when operatives of the Department of State Security (DSS) and the Nigeria Police stormed the Assembly complex, sealing off offices and frisking everyone attempting to enter. Lawmakers condemned the move as “a rape of democracy” and an attempt to intimidate the legislature.
Obasa has since sued the Lagos State House of Assembly and Speaker Meranda, challenging the legality of his impeachment. The APC leadership is divided on the issue, with some believing Obasa’s removal was long overdue, while others feel there wasn’t enough consultation before his removal.
As the situation unfolds, all eyes are on President Bola Tinubu to intervene and call the parties to order. Some are calling for a truce, where Meranda resigns honorably and returns as Deputy Speaker, while Obasa is reinstated. However, with Obasa’s legal battle and the opposition to Meranda’s leadership, the Lagos Assembly may become a battleground for power, influence, and political survival.
