Labor Unions Stage Nationwide Picketing Over Electricity Tariff Hike

On Monday, May 13, 2024, members of organized labor took to the streets, picketing the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and distribution companies (DisCos) nationwide in protest against the recent increase in electricity tariffs.

Prompted by a joint directive from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), workers gathered at various locations, demanding an immediate reversal of the tariff hike. Led by prominent figures such as NLC President Joe Ajaero, protesters blocked entrances to company premises, disrupting operations and urging the government to address their grievances.

The picketing action, which began as early as 7 AM in some areas, saw union members wielding placards and chanting solidarity songs, emphasizing the adverse impact of the tariff hike on the populace. From Kaduna to Kwara, and Akure to Zamfara, workers stood firm, vowing to continue their protest until their demands are met.
