A 47-year-old Gambian farmer, Musa Darboe, has achieved a remarkable turnaround in his family’s rice farm, transforming it from a struggling 3-hectare operation to a thriving 100-hectare mechanised success story. Darboe, who left behind a lucrative $100,000 engineering job in the United States, credits his breakthrough to the expertise of Huang Zhi, a representative of the Chinese agricultural company Longping Hi-Tech.
After visiting Hunan Province in central China multiple times to learn advanced rice cultivation techniques, Darboe’s yields increased significantly to 7 tons per hectare, triple the local average. His success has inspired local youth to adopt modern farming practices.
Darboe’s remarkable transformation has caught the attention of China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who described his story as “another beautiful chapter in China-Africa friendship.” Darboe’s achievement serves as a testament to the power of collaboration and knowledge sharing between nations.
