The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, has been making significant progress in reducing federal spending. According to a recent update, DOGE has been saving the federal government approximately $1 billion per day.
These savings are largely attributed to three key areas: stopping the hiring of people into unnecessary positions, deleting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives, and halting improper payments to foreign organizations.
These efforts are consistent with President Trump’s Executive Orders and are seen as a positive step towards reducing federal spending. However, Musk believes that this is just the beginning and aims to increase the daily savings to over $3 billion.
Musk’s plans for DOGE also involve recommending executive actions that could result in significant headcount reductions across the government
This includes eliminating unnecessary federal regulations and reducing the size of federal agencies. Some of the specific areas being targeted for cuts include:
- Unauthorized Federal Expenditures: DOGE aims to eliminate unauthorized federal expenditures, which total over $500 billion annually
- Corporation for Public Broadcasting: The department plans to cut funding to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which currently receives $535 million per year
- Grants to International Organizations: DOGE also plans to reduce grants to international organizations, which currently total $1.5 billion annually.
Overall, the Department of Government Efficiency’s efforts to reduce federal spending are off to a promising start. With Musk at the helm, the department is likely to continue pushing for significant reforms in the coming months.
