A powerful magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Japan’s southern Kumamoto Prefecture on Tuesday afternoon, triggering an explosion at the AEON Mall in Kashima Town that has left multiple people trapped and dozens injured, according to Japanese public broadcaster NHK and international news agencies.
What We Know So Far
The quake hit Kyushu island at around 4:27 p.m. local time, registering at the highest end of Japan’s seismic intensity scale. Shortly after, firefighters received reports of an explosion and white smoke rising from the AEON Mall, one of the region’s largest shopping centres. NHK later reported that the mall’s second floor had collapsed, trapping a number of shoppers and staff beneath the debris. Around 200 people had reportedly evacuated to the mall’s parking lot as rescue teams and fire crews raced to the scene.
At least 50 people have been treated for injuries so far, with reports of additional casualties from a derailed freight train and other collapsed buildings across the prefecture. More than 150,000 residents have been instructed to move to evacuation centres. Japan’s Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, addressed the nation, confirming injuries and damage while noting that the full scale of the disaster was still being assessed.
The earthquake also disrupted major infrastructure: bullet train and rail services were suspended, Kumamoto Airport shut its runway, and tens of thousands of homes lost power. Global tech manufacturers including TSMC, Sony, and Fujifilm evacuated staff from nearby plants as a precaution. A brief tsunami warning was issued and later lifted.
