ABUJA LOCAL COUNCIL CHAIRMEN HAVE FAILED – APGA YOUTH LEADER🇳🇬

Grassroots governance remains the foundation upon which sustainable development is built, particularly in rapidly growing urban centres like the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). This was the central message emphasized by Comrade Onyebuchi Chukwu, National Youth Leader of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), during an interaction with Nigeria Magazine.

Speaking on the importance of people-centred leadership, Comrade Chukwu said the failure of Abuja’s local council chairmen to genuinely engage communities has stalled development at the grassroots. According to him, governance must move beyond policy statements and elite conversations to directly address the everyday realities of residents across the FCT.

He noted that the local government system, designed to be the closest tier of governance to the people, has largely fallen short of expectations. Many communities, he observed, continue to grapple with poor infrastructure, unemployment, inadequate sanitation, weak primary healthcare, and limited youth-focused programmes despite budgetary allocations to area councils.

“Grassroots governance creates an avenue for inclusion, accountability, and effective service delivery,” Chukwu said. “When community members are involved in decision-making, projects are more likely to reflect genuine needs rather than political interests.”

The APGA youth leader highlighted the strategic role of youths in driving development, describing them not merely as beneficiaries of governance but as active partners in nation-building. He called for increased youth participation in leadership, policy formulation, and political processes, particularly at the local and area council levels.
“The future of governance lies in how well we prepare and engage young people today,” he stated, adding that political parties and government institutions must invest deliberately in leadership training, civic education, and economic opportunities for youths in the FCT.

On political development, Comrade Chukwu underscored the need for ideology-driven politics focused on service delivery rather than personality-based ambitions. He advocated governance models anchored on transparency, social justice, and long-term development planning, noting that weak accountability at the local council level has eroded public trust.

He also stressed the importance of collaboration between government, traditional institutions, civil society organisations, and community leaders to ensure development initiatives are inclusive and sustainable. According to him, such partnerships help bridge the gap between government intentions and community expectations.

Comrade Chukwu further emphasized that security, employment creation, and infrastructure development must be addressed simultaneously for the FCT to experience balanced growth. He warned that continued neglect of grassroots concerns could fuel social discontent and deepen distrust in governance structures.

As Nigeria continues to navigate political and economic reforms, the APGA youth leader maintained that strengthening grassroots governance in the FCT could serve as a development model for other states across the country.

The conversation reinforced the view that development is most effective when it begins at the community level—where policies meet people, and leadership is measured by impact rather than promises.
