Nigeria’s Ambitious Revenue Target for 2026
By Kay Noel
The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has set a bold revenue target of ₦40.71 trillion for the 2026 fiscal year, representing a 44% increase from the ₦28.289 trillion collected in 2025. This ambitious goal is part of the government’s drive for fiscal self-sufficiency and aims to support the country’s $1 trillion economy ambition.
The revenue drive is focused on strengthening non-oil revenue mobilization, leveraging technology platforms like e-invoicing and e-filing, and closing tax leakages. This strategic approach is expected to enhance tax efficiency and boost revenue generation. The NRS’s record-breaking performance in 2025, where it surpassed its ₦25.2 trillion goal, provides a solid foundation for the ambitious 2026 target.
However, critics have raised concerns about the potential tax burden on citizens, suggesting that the target may imply aggressive taxation to fund government spending. Despite these concerns, the NRS’s efforts to improve tax administration and compliance are expected to play a crucial role in achieving the revenue target and driving economic growth.
