(Reflections from a Social Media Manager & Content Creator)
By Rachael Oluwafunke Adewole
Nigeria is home to millions of women and girls; brilliant, creative, and full of potential. Yet, far too many still don’t realize the power of social media. Some see it as mere entertainment. Others avoid it entirely. While the world is building brands, securing jobs, sharing knowledge, and amplifying voices, many women are scrolling in silence or missing from the space altogether.
And that’s a missed opportunity.
Social media is more than likes and trends; it’s a tool for empowerment:
Learning & Development: Free access to digital skills, online courses, and thought leadership.
Visibility & Storytelling: Sharing your journey, building a personal brand, connecting with a global audience.
Entrepreneurship: Promoting your business, reaching customers, and earning income with zero storefront.
Advocacy & Influence: Raising your voice, supporting causes, and being part of important conversations.
I’ve seen women transform their lives through Instagram shops, LinkedIn connections, YouTube tutorials, and X (Twitter) communities. But I’ve also seen many who are absent; not because they lack value, but because they don’t know the value they hold.
As a social media manager and content creator, I’ve seen women who turn ideas into impact. But I’ve also watched how digital fear, low confidence, and lack of access keep many locked out of this powerful space.
So what’s next for women and girls in Nigeria?
We must go beyond awareness and push for inclusion, digital education, and ownership.
Teach girls early; not just how to use social media, but how to leverage it.
Support women-led platforms and creators.
Create safe spaces online for learning, expression, and growth.
Challenge stereotypes that say women shouldn’t be visible or vocal.
Nigeria @65 is a reminder:
The future is digital. And if women and girls are not prepared, they will be left behind; again.
But if we rise now; to learn, to lead, to create; then the next 65 years can be hers to own.
