British-Nigerian Artist Slawn Makes History

British-Nigerian artist and designer Olaolu Akeredolu-Ale, better known as Olaolu Slawn, has become one of the most talked-about young creatives in recent years.

Slawn began his career at Wafflesncream, Nigeria’s first skate shop, where his work attracted brands like Supreme and Dime. In 2018, he co-founded the clothing label Motherlan, which gained recognition across Nigeria and even caught the attention of late fashion icon Virgil Abloh.

Later that year, Slawn moved to London to study graphic design at Middlesex University. During the COVID-19 lockdown, he discovered painting and developed a unique style using spray paint, graffiti, and pop art.

He held his first exhibition in 2021 at London’s Truman Brewery. The following year, musician Skepta featured his work in a Sotheby’s auction. In 2023, Slawn achieved a milestone as the youngest and first Nigerian-born artist to design both the set and award statuette for the Brit Awards.

Slawn’s journey shows how he has blended art, fashion, and culture, making a strong mark on the international stage.
