Democrats are projected to have taken control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives. Decision Desk HQ and NBC have projected a Democratic Senate majority, and Democrats had already been projected to win a majority in the House earlier in the evening. Democrats needed to flip four seats to take control of the Senate, and they have now gone past that mark.
The Senate flips reported so far include South Carolina, where Annie Andrews won, North Carolina, where Roy Cooper won, Texas, where James Talarico became the first Democrat to win a Texas Senate seat since 1988, Ohio, Kansas, where Adam Hamilton became the first Democrat to win a Kansas Senate seat since 1932, and Iowa, where Josh Turek won. Fifty-one seats are required to control the Senate, and Democrats have now cleared that threshold according to the projections.
Several races were still to watch, including Michigan, where Abdul El-Sayed was leading Mike Rogers 51.8 percent to 46.2 percent with 76 percent reporting, which would be another Democratic hold. Alaska and Mississippi were also still listed as too early to call. It was a rough night for Trump and the Republicans, especially after Trump campaigned heavily in the final weeks to try to hold those red states.
