This summer, Jeremiah Carnegie led by example — giving 780 Croydon-based children, parents and family members access to swimming and sports facilities that many could otherwise never afford. In a time when the cost of living puts even a simple pool day out of reach for many families, his initiative proved what’s possible when there’s a will.

Swimming isn’t just fun — it’s a life-saving skill, a confidence builder, and a foundation for positive mental attitude and family bonding. Programmes like this are exactly the kind of opportunity-creation urban communities need.

But Croydon’s summer to remember shouldn’t be the exception. This is where the conversation needs to move from celebration to action.

While Croydon has had its summer to remember, Children across London and the wider UK 🇬🇧 still need affordable access to swimming and sports facilities. Conversation needs to move from celebration to action.

Nigeria Magazine is raising this story directly to the people and institutions with the power to scale by taking this from one borough’s success to a standard for every child in the country:

▶️ Croydon Council — to recognise and build on the momentum Jeremiah has created locally

▶️ Mayor of London Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan – to consider borough-wide and city-wide investment in affordable swimming access

▶️ Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government — to factor leisure and sports access into community funding priorities

▶️ Andy Burnham — as a voice for regional models of affordable public sport and leisure provision that other cities, including London, could learn from

Well done, Jeremiah Carnegie — you made it #Swimmember. Now let’s keep the momentum going.
