As the United States marks the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, Nigeria Magazine remembers the one Nigerian who died in the tragedy.
His name was Godwin O. Ajala.
Born in Ebonyi State, Nigeria in 1968, Ajala was a trained lawyer who left Nigeria in 1995 for the United States to build a better life for his family. Like many in the diaspora, he carried his ambition with him – working as a security officer at the World Trade Center while studying to take the New York State Bar Exam.
On the morning of September 11, 2001, when terror struck the Twin Towers, Ajala had every reason to run.
He did not.
Eyewitness accounts and family tributes record that he repeatedly stayed behind in the South Tower to guide, direct and push people to safety. He chose to help others escape rather than save himself.
In the chaos of smoke, fire and falling debris, Ajala suffered severe smoke inhalation and exhaustion. He was struck by falling debris during the collapse. Found unconscious, he slipped into a coma and succumbed to his injuries a few days later, on September 15, 2001. He was 33 years old.
Godwin Ajala was the only Nigerian confirmed to have died as a result of the September 11 attacks.
His sacrifice embodies the best of the Nigerian spirit abroad — resilience, courage, and a deep sense of duty to humanity even at great personal cost.
Today, his name is permanently inscribed on the official roll of victims at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum in New York City, where the world comes to remember.
Twenty-five years on, we do not just remember how he died. We remember how he lived — and how he led others to life.
