The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat has partnered with Nigeria’s Bergmans Security on a major $3.1 billion customs digitisation project aimed at modernising customs operations across 50 African nations.
The initiative is designed to transform customs processes through digital technology, including digital portals, real-time cargo tracking and automated inspection systems.
The project is expected to make cross-border trade faster and more efficient by reducing delays at borders and improving the coordination of customs operations across participating African countries.
The partnership also seeks to promote greater transparency and efficiency in the movement of goods, while supporting AfCFTA’s broader objective of creating a more integrated African market.
By deploying technology-driven customs systems, the initiative could help address some of the challenges that businesses face when moving goods across African borders, including lengthy clearance processes and differences in customs procedures.
The project represents another major step towards the digital transformation of African trade and the realisation of a more connected continental market under the AfCFTA framework.
