She grew up in Addis Ababa. Now she’s rewriting what Computer Science looks like at the highest level.
Meet Rediet Abebe.
She came up through Ethiopia’s local school system; no international curriculum, no head start. Just the standard Ethiopian education, all the way through 8th grade.
Then something rare happened.
At 14, she won a merit scholarship to Addis Ababa’s top English-language school. Suddenly she was the only local Ethiopian kid in a room full of diplomats’ children and expats. No connections. No cushion. Just her mind.
Four years later, she left Ethiopia for Harvard.
She earned her math degree there. Then a master’s in math from Cambridge. Then a PhD in computer science from Cornell.
By her late 20s, Rediet had stacked degrees from three of the top universities on earth; across two continents.
Most people with that resume go to Google.
Rediet didn’t.
She chose to build a career using computer science and AI to tackle inequity; from access to healthcare, to housing, to the justice system. Today, she’s a professor, researcher, and one of the most respected voices in tech for equity-driven AI.
