Many people are feared dead after an aircraft crashed in Igbokoda, headquarters of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, on Monday, October 5, 2026. The incident has thrown the riverine community into shock, and authorities say the full circumstances are still being established.

The Ondo State Police Command confirmed the crash through its spokesperson, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, who told journalists in Akure that details were still emerging. Residents were reported to have scampered for safety as the coastal community was thrown into panic.

Early reports differ on the nature of the aircraft. Channels Television reported that it was a military aircraft with tail number NGR 931, flying from Benin to Lagos. Other outlets described it as a helicopter, and Premium Times noted that the identity of the aircraft and the people on board had yet to be ascertained. Neither account has been officially reconciled, and the number of people on board has not been confirmed.

On survivors, Channels Television carried a report headlined with Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s statement that no survivor had been found yet. At the time of writing, no official death toll had been released.

Police have urged residents of Igbokoda and neighbouring communities to remain calm and avoid circulating unverified information.
