Dignitaries, including former Ghanaian President John Mahama, ex-Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, Catholic Bishop Matthew Kukah, and Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, gathered in Abeokuta for Chief Olusegun Obasanjo’s 87th birthday. The celebration, held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, featured the launch of Obasanjo’s book, “The Art of Leading: Unconventional Wisdom from Biblical,” and the Olusegun Obasanjo Leadership Institute (OOLI).
Obasanjo highlighted the need to groom selfless leaders for Africa, emphasizing the importance of transformational and servant leadership. He called for an African-style democracy that aligns with the continent’s culture and history, questioning the relevance of Western liberal democracy in the African context.
Former President Mahama stressed the importance of inclusive democracy, urging African leaders to consider the views of the opposition for effective progress.
Goodluck Jonathan pointed out challenges in Nigeria’s democracy, such as greed in leadership, tribalism, and the need for improved human rights and election quality.
