Atiku Wins ADC Presidential Primary Ahead of 2027 Election

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has emerged as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 general election after defeating former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, and businessman Mohammed Hayatu-Deen in the party’s nationwide direct primary election.

The primary election, which was conducted across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), attracted widespread attention as the ADC seeks to strengthen its position as a major opposition force ahead of the next general election.

According to the results announced by the party’s electoral committee, Atiku secured the highest number of votes cast by registered party members nationwide to clinch the party’s presidential ticket.

In his acceptance speech, Atiku thanked party members and supporters for the confidence reposed in him. He pledged to provide purposeful leadership, promote national unity, and address the country’s economic and security challenges if elected president in 2027.

The former vice president also called on his fellow contestants and party faithful to close ranks and work together to build a stronger ADC capable of challenging for power in the next election cycle.

“Our collective goal should be to rescue Nigeria and provide the leadership that will restore hope and prosperity to our people,” Atiku said.

However, the outcome of the primary has not been without controversy. Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, rejected the results of the election, raising concerns over the conduct of the process. Meanwhile, businessman Mohammed Hayatu-Deen was absent during the final collation and announcement of results in Abuja.

Political observers believe Atiku’s emergence sets the stage for what is expected to be a highly competitive 2027 presidential election, as political parties continue preparations and realignments ahead of the polls.

With the ADC now having its flag bearer, attention is expected to shift to party reconciliation efforts and strategies aimed at expanding support across the country in the months leading to the general election.
