Nigerians Won’t Be Denied Bank Access Over Tax IDs – JTB

The Joint Tax Board (JTB) has dismissed reports suggesting that Nigerians without a Tax Identification Number (Tax ID) would be denied access to their bank accounts or financial transactions from January 1, 2026.

In a statement signed by its Head of Corporate Communications, Akpe E. Adoh, the Board assured Nigerians that banking services would continue unhindered even after the date in question.

The JTB explained that ongoing tax reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration are aimed at simplifying compliance, eliminating multiple taxation, granting exemptions to vulnerable groups and small businesses, and ultimately lowering taxes for most Nigerians.

As part of these reforms, the JTB—working with the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and state tax authorities—is developing a harmonised National Tax Identification system. Under this arrangement, the National Identification Number (NIN) will serve as the unique identifier for individuals, while the Registration Number (RC) will apply to businesses. This process will allow for the automatic generation of Tax IDs without disrupting banking or financial activities.

The Board urged the public to disregard contrary claims, stressing that Nigerians would not be denied access to their accounts for lacking a Tax ID.

According to the JTB, its commitment remains focused on people-centred tax policies that promote fairness, economic growth, and ease of doing business, while maintaining a tax-friendly environment.
