Michelle Obama Pledges Over $1 Million to Support Girls’ Education Across 15 Countries

Former United States First Lady Michelle Obama has announced a commitment of more than $1 million to support organisations working to improve education and expand opportunities for adolescent girls across 15 countries.

The announcement was made on October 11, 2026, to mark the International Day of the Girl, through the Girls Opportunity Alliance, an initiative of the Obama Foundation dedicated to educating and empowering girls worldwide.

The funding will support 25 grassroots organisations providing scholarships, mentorship, after-school programmes, leadership training and other resources to help girls overcome barriers to education and achieve their potential.

According to the Obama Foundation, the initiative aims to strengthen community-based organisations that work directly with girls, particularly those facing challenges in accessing quality education and opportunities for personal development.

Among the beneficiaries is the Girls First Initiative in Tanzania, which plans to establish leadership clubs in four secondary schools to help girls develop leadership skills and participate more actively in their communities.

Another beneficiary, Squash Dreamers in Jordan, provides girls with opportunities to learn, play sports and build supportive relationships in a safe environment.

Other supported organisations operate in countries including Costa Rica, Nepal and Haiti, addressing different challenges affecting girls through mentorship, academic support, safe spaces and community-based programmes.

Speaking about the initiative, Obama reiterated her belief in the potential of every girl to make a meaningful difference in her community and the wider world.

She emphasised that investing in girls is not only the right thing to do but also an investment in a brighter future for everyone.

Launched in 2018, the Girls Opportunity Alliance has supported more than 265 grassroots projects across 50 countries, reaching over 190,000 girls, according to the Obama Foundation.

The latest commitment builds on the foundation’s broader efforts to connect local organisations, strengthen their programmes and expand access to education and leadership opportunities for adolescent girls.

Through the initiative, participating organisations will also benefit from a wider support network that encourages collaboration and the sharing of knowledge and resources.

The announcement highlights the role of community-based organisations in addressing educational inequalities and creating opportunities for girls to develop their skills, build confidence and contribute to their communities.

By directing resources towards organisations working directly with girls, the Girls Opportunity Alliance continues to promote education and empowerment as essential pathways to a more inclusive future.
