Dangote Refinery Ranks Among the World’s Largest Oil Refineries

Nigeria’s Dangote Refinery has secured a place among the world’s largest oil refineries, ranking seventh on a global list of major refining facilities by crude-processing capacity.

The ranking places the Lagos-based refinery alongside some of the biggest refining complexes in Asia, the Middle East, the Americas and Latin America, highlighting Nigeria’s growing significance in the global downstream petroleum industry.

According to the ranking shown in the accompanying infographic, India’s Jamnagar complex occupies the top position, with an estimated capacity of between 1.24 million and 1.40 million barrels per day.

Venezuela’s Paraguaná complex ranks second at approximately 955,000 barrels per day, while South Korea’s Ulsan refinery comes third with about 840,000 barrels per day.

The United Arab Emirates’ Ruwais refinery complex ranks fourth, with an estimated capacity ranging from 817,000 to 922,000 barrels per day. South Korea also features prominently, with Yeosu and Onsan occupying fifth and sixth positions respectively.

Dangote Refinery Takes Seventh Position

The Dangote Refinery, located in the Lekki Free Zone in Lagos State, is listed seventh with a capacity of approximately 650,000 barrels per day.

The facility, owned by Dangote Industries, has a nameplate capacity of 650,000 barrels per day and is widely recognised as the world’s largest single-train petroleum refinery.

The refinery’s emergence has significantly changed Nigeria’s position within the petroleum value chain. For decades, the country exported crude oil while relying heavily on imported refined petroleum products. The Dangote facility was built to process crude domestically and supply refined products to Nigeria and international markets.

Recent developments have further strengthened the refinery’s position. In June 2026, the facility reportedly achieved a processing capacity of 700,000 barrels per day during a performance test, exceeding its original 650,000-barrel-per-day nameplate capacity.

More Than Just a Refinery

The Dangote project is an integrated petroleum and petrochemical complex designed to produce products including petrol, diesel, aviation fuel and other petroleum-related products.

Its scale has also positioned Nigeria as a more significant player in the regional refined-products market. Recent reports indicate that the refinery has been supplying refined petroleum products to markets beyond Nigeria, strengthening the country’s role in Africa’s downstream energy sector.

The facility has also been credited with helping reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported refined petroleum products. The Economist Intelligence Unit reported in May 2026 that the refinery was meeting a substantial share of Nigeria’s domestic petrol demand as it approached full operational capacity.
