Highways are usually where clean energy conversations end, not begin. Engines idle, traffic hums, & the roadside is treated as dead space; somewhere to put a wall & forget about it. #SouthKorea🇰🇷is rewriting that assumption.
🇰🇷authorities are retrofitting the concrete & acrylic soundwalls that line busy expressways with solar photovoltaic #PVpanels. The barriers now also double as vertical power plants, turning idle infrastructure into a genuine source of clean electricity⚡️
The Dongbu Expressway example
One of the clearest examples sits along Seoul’s Dongbu Expressway, where a 479-metre stretch of soundwall has been fitted with more than 3,300 solar panels. Angled to catch sunlight throughout the day, the barrier generates approximately 830,000 kWh of electricity every year; enough to meaningfully offset the energy needs of surrounding facilities, all without requiring a single additional hectare of land.
That’s the real innovation here: it’s #solarpower layered onto infrastructure that already exists, not competing with agriculture or housing, doing a job it was already doing.
Why this matters beyond Seoul
For fast-urbanising cities like Lagos, Abuja, the appeal is obvious. Land is expensive & contested, but road networks; & the noise barriers, overpasses, & medians that come with them; are everywhere & mostly underused as energy assets. 🇰🇷’s solar soundwalls point to a broader model: instead of treating #cleanenergy & infrastructure as separate projects, 🌆can design them to serve2️⃣purposes at once.
Lesson for Nigeria🇳🇬 & its rapidly growing states & cities investing heavily in new expressways, flyovers, & urban transport corridors. As 🇳🇬continues to expand its highway network & grapple with unreliable grid power, dual-purpose infrastructure; noise control by day, night-lighting or grid support by design; offers a way to get more value out of every naira spent on roads.
The bigger picture
🇰🇷approach is a small but instructive example of “energy-integrated infrastructure”; a design philosophy where public works are built (or retrofitted) to generate value beyond their original function. #Solarsoundwalls won’t replace large-scale renewable projects, but their benefits add up: reduced transmission losses, 0️⃣land acquisition, & visible reminder to commuters of access to clean.
As African🌆look for practical, land-efficient ways to expand renewable capacity, 🇰🇷’s roadside solar walls are worth watching; not as a silver bullet, but as proof of what works.
