COURT ORDERS REMAND OF OMOLEYE SOWERE IN KUJE PRISON

The Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Umar Abubakar, has ordered the remand of the Presidential Candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), flagbearer, at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending further proceedings in his ongoing trial.

Sowore was ordered to be remanded following his failure to appear before the court on Tuesday, 16 June, 2026.

The case, instituted by the Federal Government of Nigeria, involves multiple counts bordering on alleged cyber-related offences and statements considered to be defamatory and capable of inciting public disorder. The trial has been ongoing since 2025, with Sowore consistently denying all allegations brought against him.

Speaking to journalists after the ruling, Sowore said he is prepared to go to prison, adding that he would emerge “more resolute and stronger.”

The Publicity Secretary of the African Action Congress, Rex Elanu, criticised the court’s decision, describing it as unfair to Nigerians. He argued that the judiciary should prioritise cases relating to terrorism, corruption, and insecurity.

Sowore is expected to remain in custody, pending further judicial directives. He is also scheduled to return to court on Wednesday, 24 June, 2026, when further proceedings in the matter are expected to continue.

The case continues to attract national attention as legal arguments unfold at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
