The colourful ceremony held at the traditional Urokpota ground, top government officials, traditional rulers, as well as members of the diplomatic community, were in Benin to witness the coronation. A mammoth crowd escorted the new Oba from Usama palace to Urhokpata in Benin. The coronation journey is important to an average Benin person, with the last coronation of an Oba in the kingdom, (Oba Erediauwa), taking place 37 years ago, in 1979.
TWO prominent traditional groups in Benin Kingdom, the Ogbelaka and Eguadase groups, commenced a spiritual dance called Ekassa to herald the Crown Prince of Benin, Ehenede Erediauwa to the throne of the Oba of Benin.
Activities marking the coronation of the 40th Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, continued in Benin on Saturday with a Durbar Festival organised in honour of the Oba by the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar II.
According to Oba Ewuare II, the Obaship as culture and tradition remains ‘the channel through which the ancestors continue to guide and protect the interest of the people’.
